Santa Margherita Ligure

An enchanting village on the Eastern Ligurian Riviera

The Roman origins of the city are attested by some finds discovered in the area, but the history of Santa Margherita, confirmed by documents, dates back to the Middle Ages.

After becoming a fief of the Fieschi family in the 13th century, it came under Genoese control. And so it was until the end of the 18th century. On 18 July 1798, the village was still divided into two autonomous hamlets: Corte, which was located in front of the port area, and Pescino on the sea side of the parish church, along the beach of Ghiaia, divided by the hill.
Well, that day, the Municipalists who presided over the Canton of Santa Margherita and the Canton of San Giacomo, two cantons that were often in bitter rivalry, settled in Pescino.
On 22 December 1812, Napoleon, with an imperial decree, definitively united Santa Margherita and San Giacomo into a single municipality that bore his august name: Porto Napoleone, but after the fall of the empire, the governor settled in Genoa and the individual municipalities were entrusted to provisional administrations.
In 1818, by will of the governor, the city of Santa Margherita di Rapallo arose, led by a Council of Elders, headed by Gerolamo Costaguta.
After 45 years, Vittorio Emanuele II will definitively decree the name of Santa Margherita Ligure in 1863.
